History of Ocean Lodge buildings

by Robert L. Fahs II (PM)
Founded in 1857, Ocean Lodge #214 F&AM built its first lodge in Hanover square in what is now Brunswick's south end. The two-story wooden structure was built in a manner, which would provide income by using the top floor for the lodge, while the ground floor was rented to the city and used as City Hall for many years.

Over the decades the lodge relocated to downtown Brunswick, occupying what is now brother Ned Cash's jewelry store.

In the early 1950s, Ocean Lodge voted to build a new location at its current site of 2601 Parkwood Drive. Because it is adjacent to the hospital, the bottom floor has space for five doctors offices, which, again, provides income to the lodge.

No local bank would finance the undertaking so several members of the lodge pledged their personal savings to fund the construction. Brother John Christian Kauffman traveled to Macon and arranged for an insurance company to carry the mortgage.

The Grand Lodge of Georgia dedicated the new lodge in 1955 and over the past 48 years, its members have enjoyed the benefits of this wonderful facility. Over the past 147 years, Ocean Lodge has been the Masonic home to many great leaders in business, government and the community.
